Thematically based on a concert B Flat scale and arpeggio, this inventive overture contains marvelous melodies and distinctive harmonies. Even at this easy grade level, Anne McGinty uses a nice variety of scoring techniques to alternately feature the woodwinds and brass sections. This is quality music for your beginning group!

Technical Notes: The oboe, tenor saxophone, and French horn parts are optional. The percussion part is marked for snare drum, bass drum, and cymbals.

Teaching aids for the director: Based on a concert B Flat scale and arpeggio, this melody is excellent for reinforcing good intonation in all sections of the young band. Breath marks are indicated at the half-way point of the 8-bar phrase. The students should strive for a 4-bar phrase divisions rather than 2-bar. For example, the trumpets should aim for the C in measure 3 so there is energy throughout measure 2, eliminating any pause after the third beat in measure 2.

The mezzo forte indicated at the beginning should be playing with a well supported tone. Dynamic contrasts throughout the overture (mezzo forte, mezzo piano, and piano, with forte at the end) can be practiced during the warm-ups on the B Flat scale and arpeggio.

The rhythms are simple thus allowing extra rehearsal time for tone development as well as attacks and releases. The attacks are especially important as different instruments are required to make independent entrances. The relatively thin scoring allows each section the opportunity to be heard and provides an incentive for developing a characteristic sound.

If the bass line is too heavy for the upper woodwinds at measure 25, thin it out to one on a part, or whatever combination of low woodwinds and brass sounds best. Bring everyone back in at measure 33. Measures 39-41 may also need to have a lighter bass to balance the flutes and first clarinets.

If a suspended cymbal is not available, one crash cymbal may be held (suspended) by one player while another plays the roll. Soft timpani mallets should be used, held with a matched grip. Use a small single stroke roll (with no rebounds) played near the edge of the cymbal. To crescendo, make the stroke slightly larger. Allow the cymbal to ring, as the notation indicates.

The Andante at measure 25 is an elongated E Flat major version of the original tune. "Legato" is marked in each part and both the melody and the accompaniment should be very smooth and flowing.
