One of the hardest Sousa marches to find in print, "Power And Glory" is a rare find indeed. With the melody of "Onward Christian Soldiers" incorporated into the piece, we're sure you'll find lots of uses for this unusual Sousa march!

Technical Notes: John Philip Sousa composed this march in June 1923 to honor Thomas E. Mitten, president of the Philadelphia Rapid Transit Company. Not only did Mitten's trolleys carry tremendous audiences to Willow Grove Park for Sousa's concerts, but his company owned the park as well. The original title of this march was "March Of The Mitten Men", but Sousa enthusiastically agreed to his publisher's suggestion to switch the title to the more evocative "Power And Glory" on a subsequent printing. The march was published in 1923 in editions for band, piano solo, and piano duet. An orchestral version was published the following year. In honoring Thomas Mitten with this march, Sousa included Mitten's favorite hymn, "Onward, Christian Soldiers" by Sir Arthur Sullivan.

Sousa varied from his standard march form to give the hymn its strongest musical impact. The Trio consists of a countermelody and accompaniment to the not-yet-heard hymn, appearing to be a standard Trio. However, in place of the expected raucous transitional "dogfight" strain is a simple subdued chorale setting of Sullivan's hymn (with no percussion!). The final strain is a heroic meeting of the hymn in "tutta forza" Trombones and Baritones against the previously-heard countermelody. While deft counterpoint is standard for Sousa, the separate introductions of distinct themes and their later co-mingling is atypical.

Editorial Notes: This publication transfers Sousa's 1923 marching instrumentation to the modern band as authentically as possible. While most parts remain the same, some have been tranposed or re-labeled to reflect modern instrumentation. No new parts are added, and no dynamics or articulations are added except to fix errors in the 1923 edition. A tremendous amount of unintentionally conflicting dynamics, articulations, and even pitches have been rectified. Sousa's original manuscript is a rushed shorthand sketch in a different key and cannot be considered his final fair copy for publication; the editor wishes to thank Keith Brion for loaning a copy of the manuscript.

Performance Notes: Sousa composed for his own band's popular performances. As with most popular music, part of the excitement of live performance of a familiar tune is in hearing a fresh interpretation; and it is well-documented that Sousa liked to be impulsive in concert. While it is important to learn a march literally, as a starting point, conductors should feel free to take judicious liberties, particularly with the percussion parts which serve more as a "lead sheet" than a fully written-out part. Other surprises and experiments with balance and dynamics will also enliven performance, once the march has been learned as written.

The present Condensed Score was created to serve as a helpful study guide, but it cannot illustrate some of the fascinating inner parts and eccentric voicings which Sousa has offered; rehearsal and performance with the Full Score is strongly encouraged.
